Letter from Fleur Cowles to George Cukor

 

An introduction letter from Fleur Cowles presenting Lesley Blanch, then wife of Romain Gary, to the legendary film maker George Cukor (« My Fair Lady », « A Star is Born » etc.).

Fleur Cowles was, among other things, a writer, an artist and the director of the magazine "Flair", published in the 50's: 

One will notice the two amusing spelling mistakes made by Cowles (Lesley BLANCHE and ROMAINE Gary). 

 

The introduction, dated April 1956, would later lead to attempts by Cukor and Blanch to adapt Gary's novel, "Lady L" into a film, which was ultimately directed by Peter Ustinov. 

Gary stayed in Los Angeles for four years, from 1956 to 1960 - his second stint in the US as a diplomat.
