First French Limited Edition

Georges Simenon: « Les Noces de Poitiers » (Gallimard, 1946)

In French

The smallest number of Simenon’s limited editions at Gallimard: only 13 copies on Lafuma Navarre pure thread vellum, the only ‘deluxe’ edition. Very rare.

Ours bears the letter "B", among the three published off-trade.

Ex Libris (Bookplate).

One of Simenon's "psychological novels", with a very dark tone. It contains very clear autobiographical elements: Liège then Paris for Simenon, Poitiers and then Paris for the hero of the book, to, in both cases, enter the service of 'patriotic leagues'.

Written during the Second World War (winter 43-44), in Vendée, it will first appear in serial form in the weekly magazine “Dimanche Paysages”.

A very fine copy in a superb binding by Claude Delpierre and Kirsten Vinding: royal blue half-morocco with bands, gouache wallpaper covers, smooth spine, white oeser titles, waxed head, paper lining and endpapers Dark green Duval paper, in a sleeve.

First American edition:

“The Couple from Poitiers”, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1986.

In perfect condition.
