This is the second volume of the Sartre’s trilogy Les Chemins de la Liberté (“The Roads to Freedom”), in which he investigates the questions of choice, values, and the principles that guide our lives.

Le Sursis (“The Reprieve”) comes after L’Âge de Raison (“The Age of Reason”, 1945) and before La Mort dans l’Âme (“Troubled Sleep”, 1949).

Set over eight days in September 1938, the novel follows a group of characters on the eve of the Munich Agreement and in the shadow of the approaching Second World War.

A fourth volume, La Dernière Chance, was planned but never completed; it would have made the series a tetralogy. Intriguingly, this 1947 first American edition announces La Dernière Chance as the forthcoming third volume of the trilogy - an information corrected in later editions.

Book and unclipped Dust Jacket (minor losses at extremities) in very good condition. An attractive copy.
