Romain Gary // Éducation Européenne
Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1945
Limited Edition
The Book is Romain Gary’s debut novel under his pen name.
It achieved notable success upon publication and launched his literary career.
The book was first published in 1944 by Cresset Press in London, where Gary was located (Gary had joined the Free French Air Force in 1940), under the title "Forest of Anger"; then, in 1945 in France by Calmann-Levy.
Subsequently, Gary reworked his book quite thoroughly, following many vicissitudes (for those interested, many details can be found in the edition from “La Pleiade”!). Gallimard published the new edition of “Éducation Européenne” in 1956, under the title: “A European Education”.
"Éducation Européenne" is a remarkable work, which tells the story of the Polish Resistance during the winter of 42/43 of a group of Partisans who fight hidden in the forest and face cold, hunger, betrayal and dead. Hope of course will prevail.
Numbered edition on Vélin du Marais (our copy: one of 950), published a few months after the original edition, in a very elegant publisher's hardcover.
Rare, in this excellent condition.
