Roger Nimier // Histoire d'un Amour
Paris, Gallimard, 1953
One of 20 numbered deluxe copies
Roger Nimier is often presented as the leader of the "Hussars."
The term, coined by Bernard Frank in 1952 in an article published in the magazine “Les Temps Modernes” (founded by Sartre and de Beauvoir), derives from Nimier’s most famous novel, “Le Hussard Bleu” (“The Blue Hussar”). But as Michel Déon once said:
“The Hussars never existed... We were very different.”
More than a movement, they formed a constellation of free, casual, and brilliant spirits—right-leaning and clearly opposed to Sartre’s ideas.
Nimier died prematurely in 1962 at the age of 37, in a car accident. He published only seven books during his lifetime, “Histoire d’un Amour”, the book we present today, being the last. A few others appeared posthumously. His friend and mentor Jacques Chardonne had advised him to slow down his publishing pace.
One of the 20 numbered deluxe copies on Hollande Van Gelder. Ours being the number 1.
Softcover, unopened, in fine condition (a minor, very small tear to the upper left corner of the front board).
