John Galsworthy (1867 - 1933) was an English novelist and playwright. He is best known for his trilogy of novels collectively called The Forsyte Saga, and two later trilogies: A Modern Comedy and End of the Chapter. He was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Literature.

"Galsworthy had met Conrad in early 1893, when a passenger on board the Torrens, of which Conrad was the first mate. This piece was written as a review of Galsworthy's novel A Man of Property, the review appeared in the March 31, 1906 issue of Outlook magazine. Conrad later had to apologize to his friend Galsworthy when this was inadvertently omitted from Notes on Life & Letters (but was later collected in Last Essays)

As with the companion piece, The Dover Patrol, Conrad disliked the initial printing because it lacked a title page (other than the wrapper), and asked that it immediately be reprinted to include one. This second printing is the one most often seen today
